Question

Hi! I am having a problem with a sweet beagle who was once house trained and has now reverted to urinating on our carpet. We can't figure out why and would appreciate any help. Thanks!
Penelope's Tips

This is a problem that will take both management and training on a daily basis. I'll show you how. It's really easy.

First of all, you need to rule out any urinary or bladder infection. I would suggest a visit to your vet to be sure he's OK. Usually when a formerly housebroken dog begins urinating in the house it can be linked to a health problem, unless some other major life change has happened to cause him stress. Major life changes could be, moving, new pet, new baby, divorce or anything major that has happende and is out of the ordinary. This could be enough to cause a dog to forget his training.

Next, you want to stop giving him the run of the house. New Problem, New Rules. My website has a topic devoted to both housebreaking and crate training. The two topics go hand in hand. It's the method I use to housebreak all my dogs and if you follow my directions, it's pretty easy, and has always works for me.

Go to the housebreaking page on my website. Follow my directions.

If your dog isn't crate trained you can go to my crate training page for help with that.

Housebreaking is not a difficult problem to solve, you just have to be consistent.
