Training Tips


Practice your sit and down stays in everyday situations. You donít need to set aside any special time for this.
1) Sit/stay while you make your dogs dinner.

2) Sit/stays at the door teaches your dog not to charge out the door without being invited.

3) Down/stay while you are eating dinner. He should be well away from the table.

4) Down/stay when guests are present. No one enjoys a dog that is constantly in their face.

Note: Remember a STAY means to remain in the position he is place in and on the EXACT spot he was placed in, facing the directions he was facing when given the "stay" command. Nothing less will do. ALSO - remember to praise for the good behavior after you release him. AND - remember to always RELEASE him from the stay - never let your dog decide when heís stayed long enough. Thatís your decision, not his.
Practice your sits and downs randomly during the day.
Do it in different places, at different times, when the dog is doing different things. The dog should respond with the proper behavior the minute you tell him to. You should never have to repeat the command. Always remember to PRAISE your dog whenever he does what you want. Praise "BIG TIME" so he knows he was really good. Heíll want to do it again and again to please you. If he gets up after you praise him thatís OK, since you didnít ask him to stay.
Practice your recalls every chance you get.
Call your dog to you at unexpected times and praise him LAVISHLY. Use both physical and verbal praise. NEVER call him to you for something unpleasant or to end some fun he is having. Always make the dog come right to you - the target point is between your knees if possible. Lots of hugs and loves follow. When you "hug" your dog, try not to make him feel like he is being restrained. Donít overdo it.

When you are playing with your dog outside, call him to you occasionally, praise and pet him and then turn him loose again to play some more. Do this a few time while you are out with him. He will learn that coming to you does not mean the fun is going to end. When you have to take him inside, go to him and take his collar and lead him inside. It doesnít hurt to give him a treat after he is inside so it was worth giving up the fun .

You can accomplish a lot of training without setting aside a 10-minute practice session, and the dog will learn to behave in everyday situations, not just when you are training.
REMEMBER - Every interaction you have with your dog is teaching him something. You are constantly training your dog. Why not make all of your training work for you.

10-Minute Sample Formal Practice Session.
(do this in different locations)
1) Begin with dog sitting at your side - preferably the left side. This tells the dog your working now.

2) Get the dogs attention.

3) Say "Lets Go" or "Heel" and begin walking with your dog at your side. - Walk strait for 30 paces - halt/sit. Walk strait for 25 paces, about turn and walk 20 paces - halt/sit. Walk strait for 30 paces - right turn - 10 paces - left turn - 10 paces - halt/sit. Walk straight 10 paces - circle to right - walk straight 10 paces - circle to left - walk 10 paces - halt/sit. Be sure to praise the dog during the exercises when heís doing it right. Donít wait till the end.

4) Do two formal recalls. - Sit dog - give stay command - walk to end of leash and turn to face dog. Call dog to you backing up a few steps so dog can come in straight. Have dog sit in front of you. (this is a "front") Praise dog. - Repeat above exercise. Have dog go to the "heel" position from the "front". (this is a "finish")

5) Put your dog in a sit/stay - go out to the end of the leash - turn and face your dog and do a 1-minute stay. Repeat with a 3-minute down. Praise for a good stay.

Repeat 1-5 again. Thatís about 10 minutes and you practiced almost everything in a more formal training session. You can add other exercises that you are working on as needed. You can also mix up the order of the exercises so you dog doesnít know what to expect every time you train.

For a "SHORT" 5-minute session do 1-5 once.

You can accomplish even more if you train in two "Short" sessions every day.
